Description
The Robin is a small passerine bird that is unmistakable due to its distinctive red-orange breast, which contrasts with the rest of its gray-brown body. It is a highly territorial species. It feeds mainly on insects and earthworms, but in winter it supplements its diet with berries and fruit. Its song is melodious and can be heard even in winter. The Robin prefers wooded areas with bushes, shrubs, and dense undergrowth. The breeding season runs from March to July, during which it builds nests well hidden among the vegetation.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In Ticino, the robin nests in all types of forests, preferring those with moist soil and dense undergrowth.
