Description
The Little Stint is a shorebird characterized by brown plumage on its upperparts and white plumage on its underparts. It has a clearly visible white stripe on its shoulder and a slender, straight bill. It can often be seen walking nimbly along the banks of waterways, searching for the small invertebrates on which it feeds. It prefers habitats such as lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Its nest is built on the ground, often hidden among vegetation and rocks.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The Little Ringed Plover has experienced a drastic decline throughout Switzerland, and especially in Ticino, where the areas occupied by the species have been cut in half compared to the 1970s. Currently, no more than 6–8 pairs remain in our canton along the Ticino, Maggia, and Brenno rivers in Loderio. Ficedula helped develop the “Conservation Plan for the Bird Fauna Typical of the Floodplains of the Canton of Ticino” in 2010, specifically to protect the Little Ringed Plover and the Little Crake.
