Description
The Blue Rock Thrush is a medium-sized bird. The adult male has distinctive bluish plumage, while the female has more brownish tones. Its diet consists mainly of insects, but it also feeds on small fruits and berries. Its melodious song is often heard from high vantage points. It prefers rocky, open habitats. The breeding season begins in the spring, with nest-building in natural cavities. It generally lays 3–5 eggs. It is a partially migratory species, with some individuals moving south during the winter.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The Solitary Sparrow, a typically Mediterranean species, reaches the northern limit of its range in Ticino. The population is estimated at 20–25 breeding pairs, found primarily in the Riviera, Leventina, and Maggia Valley. Its nesting habitat consists of abandoned or active stone quarries and rocky cliffs rich in overhangs, crevices, and niches, free of vegetation and typically warm.
