Every year, more than two billion birds migrate between Europe and Africa. On their journeys across continents—flying over seas, deserts, and mountains—they stop in areas particularly rich in food to refuel and regain their strength so they can continue their journey. One such area is the Magadino Lakes, a particularly important region because it lies right at the foot of the great geographical barrier formed by the Alps.
Since 1981, a migration research center has been operating in Le Bolle; thanks in particular to the technique of bird banding, it has helped reveal just how crucial this area is for birds and has uncovered many of the secrets surrounding this fascinating phenomenon.
