Tobacco-colored Teal

FICEDULA > Tobacco-colored Teal

Description

The Tufted Duck is a medium-sized duck, similar to the Common Teal, and is characterized by a rounded head, a short bill, and a distinct white undertail. The adult male has a vivid reddish plumage with a darker back and a white eye that stands out clearly. Females and juveniles are darker and less vivid in color. Its diet consists mainly of aquatic plants and small invertebrates. The Tufted Duck nests in marshes, lakes, and rivers with abundant vegetation. The nesting season runs from May to July, with nests built among dense vegetation.

The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland

In Ticino, the Tufted Duck is a rare species. It is known to have nested at least once at Bolle di Magadino. Additional sightings of overwintering and breeding individuals demonstrate the potential of the Bolle di Magadino reserve for this species.
