The woodcock is characterized by brown, streaked camouflage plumage that allows it to blend into the undergrowth. It has a stocky body, a short neck, and a long, straight bill, adapted for probing the ground in search of food. It is a crepuscular and nocturnal bird that feeds mainly on earthworms and insects. During the breeding season, the woodcock is known for its courtship flights at dusk, accompanied by distinctive calls. It nests on the ground, preferably in moist wooded areas. The breeding season runs from March to July, during which it lays 3–4 eggs.
