The Eurasian Wigeon is a medium-sized duck. Males have a chestnut-brown head with a cream-colored stripe across the forehead, while females have a more subdued brown plumage. The Eurasian Wigeon is known for its characteristic high-pitched whistle; its Italian name derives from this trait. It feeds mainly on aquatic vegetation and occasionally on small invertebrates. It is a partial migrant, wintering in southern Europe and Africa. It prefers habitats such as lakes, ponds, and freshwater wetlands. In the spring, nests are built on the ground, hidden among the vegetation.
