Description
The tawny owl is a medium-sized bird of prey, characterized by a sturdy build and predominantly brown plumage with dark streaks that provide excellent camouflage among tree trunks. Its large, dark eyes and round facial disk are distinctive. It prefers deciduous and mixed forests, where it feeds mainly on small mammals, birds, and insects. Its melodic nocturnal calls are very easily recognizable. It nests in tree cavities, and the breeding season begins in March. The tawny owl is highly territorial and often occupies the same territory for many years.
