The Red-rumped Flycatcher is a medium-sized bird. It has colorful plumage, especially the males, which sport a vivid blue on their heads and backs, while their chests and tails are a bright orange. The females, on the other hand, have more subdued coloring, with grayish and brown tones. The species feeds mainly on insects and other small invertebrates, but may also include fruit in its diet. In winter, it migrates to Africa. It prefers rocky and mountainous habitats, often nesting in rock crevices. The female lays 4 to 5 eggs.
