Its preferred habitat includes cultivated fields and open areas with scattered shrubs. The breeding season begins in the spring, with the construction of nests on the ground or in low bushes.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In Italian-speaking Switzerland, the Ortolano is rare. It is mainly observed during spring and fall migrations, preferring agricultural areas. The species has historically nested in Ticino, but there is no evidence of recent nesting.
