The Sea Jay is an unmistakable bird due to its bright blue plumage and wings with green and black iridescence. Its sturdy beak is slightly curved. It feeds mainly on insects, small reptiles, and other small animals. The species spends the winter in tropical Africa. It prefers open habitats such as grasslands and sparse woodlands, often nesting in tree cavities or old woodpecker nests. The breeding season takes place in the spring and early summer, with the female laying 3–5 eggs.
