Description
The Common Treecreeper is a small bird characterized by brown and white camouflage plumage, which makes it difficult to spot among the bark of trees. It measures about 12.5 cm in length. It feeds mainly on insects and spiders, which it catches while climbing tree trunks in its characteristic manner, using its long, curved beak. Its calls consist of melodious trills. It prefers deciduous and mixed forests, but can also be found in parks and gardens. It nests in tree crevices or between the bark and the trunk during the spring. A curious feature is its ability to climb in a spiral around tree trunks.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In the Canton of Ticino, the Common Redstart is a breeding and resident species. It is often found in mature forests, both in the lowlands and in the mountains. The main threats include habitat loss due to intensive forest management. However, the population is considered stable and well distributed throughout the canton. Despite occasional fluctuations, there are no indications of a significant long-term decline.
