Description
The Calandra Lark is a medium-sized bird characterized by light brown plumage with ochre hues, which allows it to blend in well with its natural habitat. Its diet is primarily insectivorous; it feeds on insects and small invertebrates found on the ground. It is a migratory bird that winters in North Africa. It prefers open habitats such as grasslands, cultivated fields, and steppes. The nesting season runs from May to July, during which it builds ground nests well hidden among the vegetation.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The Calandro, a species widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean region, prefers dry, warm grasslands. In the Prealps, these grasslands are most commonly found on sunny slopes at altitudes between 1,000 and 1,500 meters. Historically, a population was present at Bolla di Loderio. In recent years, a population has been present on Monte Generoso.
