Description
The Blackcap is a medium-sized bird, recognizable by the distinctive black cap that adorns the males’ heads, while females and juveniles have a brown cap. The Blackcap has a melodious and varied song. It feeds mainly on insects, berries, and fruits. During the winter months, some populations migrate south, while others may remain in more temperate areas. It prefers wooded habitats, gardens, and parks. It nests between April and July, building nests well hidden among the vegetation.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In Italian-speaking Switzerland, the Blackcap is widespread and nests in landscapes rich in trees and shrubs, such as forests, tree hedges, gardens, and parks. A few decades ago, only a few dozen birds remained in Ticino to overwinter; however, the trend toward the species remaining during the winter months appears to be on the rise, likely due to milder winters.
