Description
The Black Bunting is a medium-sized bird. The male has a head with black and yellow stripes and a bright yellow breast, while the female is more dull in color, with brown tones and streaks. This species feeds mainly on seeds and small insects, and is known for its melodious song, which it uses to mark its territory and during the breeding season. The Black Bunting is found primarily in open, sunny areas such as farm fields, orchards, and forest edges. It nests between April and July, building nests well hidden among low vegetation.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The Black Bunting reaches the northern limit of its range in Switzerland. In Ticino, the species is found in the Sottoceneri region and on the vineyard-covered slopes of the Magadino Plain. The Black Bunting’s typical habitat consists of open areas used for extensive agriculture and vineyards—especially those facing south—that are rich in perches.
