Description
The Alpine Chaffinch is a small bird characterized by predominantly gray plumage with black-and-white wings and a white tail with black tips. It feeds mainly on seeds and insects, which it forages for by scanning the ground. This bird lives in high mountains and prefers rocky slopes and alpine meadows. The breeding season runs from June to August, with nests built in rock crevices.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The Alpine Chaffinch is widespread in high mountain areas at altitudes between 1,800 and 3,000 meters. In Ticino, it is found in the northernmost part of the region, especially in the Naret and St. Gotthard areas.
