Description
The Wallcreeper is a bird with unique coloring. Its plumage is gray with red and black wings that become particularly striking in flight. It feeds mainly on insects and spiders, which it finds on rocky cliffs thanks to its slender, curved beak. This bird is usually sedentary, but it may undertake short vertical migrations in response to weather conditions. It lives on rocky cliffs, where it nests in rock crevices.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The Wallcreeper is widespread in Switzerland on rocky cliffs, especially at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. In Ticino, it is most common in the Sopraceneri region; it is also found in the Sottoceneri region, on Monte Generoso, and on San Salvatore. The species prefers vertical cliffs with crevices and ledges; it is also found in both abandoned and active quarries. In winter, it ventures further south to the quarries and bell towers of the Mendrisiotto region.
