Description
The Little Bittern is a small heron characterized by predominantly light brown plumage, with lighter underparts and dark wings. It feeds on small fish, aquatic insects, and amphibians. The Little Bittern prefers marshy habitats with dense rushes and reeds, where it nests during the summer months. The breeding season runs from May to July, with nests built in dense vegetation near the water. The Little Bittern can stand upright to blend in among the reeds. The species winters in Africa.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
Fewer than ten pairs of Little Bitterns nest in Ticino, mainly at the Bolle di Magadino, the Maggia Delta, and the small lakes of Gudo and Muzzano. Their preferred nesting habitat is flooded reed beds mixed with marsh grasses.
