During the spring of 2019, Ficedula, in collaboration with the Office for Nature and Landscape, conducted a cantonal inventory of the nesting sites of the Collared Flycatcher in every municipality and locality in Ticino. The objectives of the project are both research-based and conservation-oriented.

A massive project, one of a kind. Compared to past projects—even at the national level—a comprehensive survey of the territory was conducted, and even single couples were included in the count.

For every building in Ticino, we know the number of occupied nests, unoccupied intact nests, broken nests, nests under construction, artificial nests, and traces of nests, from which it is often possible to reconstruct the evolution of the colonies.

A total of 131,392 buildings were inspected, of which 3,591 had nests or signs of nests, 1,827 had occupied nests, and more than 3,000 km were covered on foot!

Since 2019, the inventory has been updated annually, and, more importantly, many conservation efforts focused on this species are currently underway.

As of 2025, more than 50 conservation efforts involving colonies or individual nests had been carried out.
