Our Commitment to Nature

Ficedula is the only association dedicated to the study and conservation of birds in Italian-speaking Switzerland. Ficedula takes its name from a beautiful, very rare, and endangered species: the Collared Flycatcher, whose scientific name is Ficedula albicollis.

The Association promotes the study of birds in Ticino with the goal of laying the groundwork for the conservation of bird species and their habitats. It regularly organizes introductory courses in ornithology, study days focused on the birds of Ticino, and numerous field trips. It is committed to habitat protection and environmental education.

Together with BirdLife Switzerland, it is involved in a conservation project for the Little Owl, the Hoopoe, the Nightjar, and other priority species. Among the other projects Ficedula is involved in are initiatives to support the Eagle Owl, Swifts, and the Kingfisher.

Ficedula is a scientific association and is part of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences, Ornithology Working Group.

Our Mission

Ficedula promotes and supports bird research in Italian-speaking Switzerland, fostering scientific studies, monitoring efforts, and citizen science projects to deepen our understanding of the species found in the region. Ficedula actively contributes to the conservation of bird populations and their natural habitats through numerous projects focused on endangered species in Italian-speaking Switzerland, as well as environmental protection initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and collaborations with various organizations and associations dedicated to nature and biodiversity.
