Description
The Collared Dove is a medium-sized bird with predominantly gray plumage and a distinctive black collar on the back of its neck. It is omnivorous, feeding on seeds, grains, and occasionally insects. Its calls are soft and repetitive. It is a sedentary species. It inhabits urban areas, parks, and gardens. The breeding season runs from spring through summer, with simple nests built in trees or on man-made structures.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In Ticino, the Collared Dove is a common breeding species. It prefers urban and suburban habitats, where it easily finds food and nesting sites. Historically, its population increased significantly during the 20th century, when it began to colonize new areas in Europe, including Ticino.
