Description
The Osprey is a medium-sized bird of prey with dark brown plumage on its upper parts and white plumage on its belly and head. It has dark bands around its eyes that extend down to its neck. It feeds primarily on fish, which it hunts by gliding over the water, then diving to capture them with its hooked talons. It spends the winter in Africa. It nests in tall trees or man-made structures near water, building large nests out of branches and vegetation. The breeding season begins in the spring, with the laying of 2–4 eggs.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In Italian-speaking Switzerland, the Osprey does not nest and can only be observed during its spring and fall migrations.
