Son plumage est enti\u00e8rement noir, avec une cr\u00eate rouge bien visible sur la t\u00eate chez les m\u00e2les ; chez les femelles, cette cr\u00eate rouge se limite \u00e0 la nuque. Il se nourrit principalement d\u2019insectes et de larves, qu\u2019il extrait en creusant dans les troncs \u00e0 l\u2019aide de son puissant bec. Le pic noir est connu pour son cri caract\u00e9ristique, fort et r\u00e9sonnant. Il privil\u00e9gie les for\u00eats matures de conif\u00e8res et de feuillus, mais peut \u00e9galement s&rsquo;adapter aux for\u00eats mixtes. Il niche dans de grandes cavit\u00e9s qu&rsquo;il creuse dans les troncs d&rsquo;arbres, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u00e0 partir du mois d&rsquo;avril. Les cavit\u00e9s abandonn\u00e9es par le pic noir sont souvent utilis\u00e9es par d\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces d\u2019oiseaux, notamment la chouette \u00e0 t\u00eate ronde, ainsi que par d\u2019autres petits mammif\u00e8res.      <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b133c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8b133c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Situation en Suisse italienne<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f69e84a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f69e84a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"font_8\">Le pic noir est largement r\u00e9pandu en Suisse et sa population semble en augmentation. Au Tessin, l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce a \u00e9tendu son aire de r\u00e9partition jusqu&rsquo;aux r\u00e9gions de basse altitude. Actuellement, il niche \u00e9galement dans le Mendrisiotto et de l&rsquo;autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la fronti\u00e8re, o\u00f9 il \u00e9tait absent il y a encore une dizaine d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es. Pour nicher, l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce a besoin de for\u00eats matures de bonne \u00e9tendue ; elle privil\u00e9gie tout particuli\u00e8rement les for\u00eats de conif\u00e8res.
