The River Warbler is a small passerine with uniform reddish-brown plumage, featuring warmer tones on the back and lighter ones on the belly, adapted for effective camouflage in dense vegetation. Very shy and more often heard than seen, it is recognizable by its loud, sudden song. It inhabits wetland areas with dense riparian vegetation, such as reed beds, brambles, and thickets along rivers, lakes, and marshes. It feeds on insects and small invertebrates and nests well hidden among low vegetation. It prefers wet habitats such as marshes, riverbanks, and lakeshores where the vegetation is dense. During the breeding season, it builds its nest on the ground, hidden among the vegetation. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The River Warbler is currently found in Switzerland only in Ticino, where it reaches the northern limit of its range. The first breeding record was discovered in 1975 in the Blenio Valley. A pair was found in 1996 in the Mendrisiotto region near Novazzano. Until 2005, 1\u20134 pairs nested almost regularly at Bolle di Magadino. In the winter of that year, a heavy snowfall had a negative impact on the population. The winter of 2012 also had a negative impact. After several years of absence, the species reappeared in the canton in 2017, where it was reported at multiple locations from Bolle to Piano di Magadino and down to the lower Riviera. In recent years, the species has also been reported in the Gulf of Agno and at the Maggia Delta.
