Males have a chestnut-brown head with a cream-colored stripe across the forehead, while females have a more subdued brown plumage. The Eurasian Wigeon is known for its characteristic high-pitched whistle; its Italian name derives from this trait. It feeds mainly on aquatic vegetation and occasionally on small invertebrates. It is a partial migrant, wintering in southern Europe and Africa. It prefers habitats such as lakes, ponds, and freshwater wetlands. In the spring, nests are built on the ground, hidden among the vegetation.        <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b133c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8b133c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f69e84a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f69e84a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"font_8\">In Italian-speaking Switzerland, the Northern Shoveler can be seen during migration periods and in winter. The number of individuals observed is generally small.
