The Wryneck is the only migratory woodpecker in Europe. It has gray-brown camouflage plumage with streaks that help it blend in with tree bark. It is known for its remarkable ability to twist its neck in an almost joint-like manner, a defensive behavior that gave it its Italian name. The Wryneck feeds mainly on ants and other insects, which it catches with its long, sticky tongue. It is a migrant that spends the winter in Africa and returns to Europe to nest, preferring open woodlands, orchards, and forest edges. It lays its eggs in natural cavities or old woodpecker nests and also readily uses nest boxes. Although quiet for most of the year, it emits a distinctive call during the breeding season.
