Description
The Common Reed Warbler is a small passerine with light brown plumage on its upperparts and beige plumage on its underparts. The Reed Warbler feeds mainly on insects and small invertebrates, which it catches among reeds and dense vegetation. It is a long-distance migrant, wintering in sub-Saharan Africa and returning to Europe to nest between April and September. Its preferred habitat consists of wetlands with abundant reed beds. It nests by building a nest suspended among the reeds, where it typically lays 3–5 eggs.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The common reed canary is found along the banks of lakes and waterways, as well as along ditches, and is closely associated with reed beds. In Ticino, the largest populations are found on the Magadino Plain at the Gudo pond and at Le Bolle, at the Muzzano pond, and at the mouth of the Maggia River.
A long-distance migrant, the Common Reed Warbler winters in sub-Saharan Africa, reaching as far south as Zambia.
