Description
The kingfisher is a small bird, easily recognizable by its bright blue and orange plumage. It flies swiftly and directly over the water, often stopping suddenly to dive and catch small fish and aquatic insects. It prefers freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, and ponds with vegetation-rich banks. The breeding season runs from April to July; the nest is usually built in sandy banks near the water.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The Kingfisher nests primarily along the Ticino and Tresa rivers and in the Bolle di Magadino. For nesting, the species requires sandy riverbanks where it can dig its nest, as well as clear, fish-rich waterways with perches that are essential for hunting. The Ticino River experiences significant migration of this species, with individuals arriving even from northern Europe, as evidenced by data collected during banding campaigns.
