Description
The starling has very distinctive plumage. In the summer, its feathers are glossy black with metallic green and purple highlights, while in the winter its plumage is speckled with white. Starlings are known for their social behavior and often form large flocks that move in spectacular formations across the sky. They feed mainly on insects, fruit, and seeds. They are migratory birds, with populations in northern Europe moving south in the winter. Their preferred habitat includes agricultural and urban areas, where they can easily find food and nesting sites. The breeding season runs from April to July, during which they build nests in tree hollows or buildings. They have an incredible ability to mimic sounds, including those of other birds and environmental noises.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In Ticino, the Starling is common and breeds there. It is often seen in agricultural areas, but also in urban parks and gardens.
