Description
The monk vulture is one of the largest diurnal birds of prey in the world, with dark plumage ranging from brown to black. Its head is bare, with bluish-gray skin. Adults have an impressive wingspan that can reach nearly 3 meters. This vulture feeds primarily on carrion, playing an essential role in the ecosystem as a scavenger. Typically sedentary, some individuals may undertake dispersal movements. They prefer open, semi-arid habitats, such as steppes and mountains, where they nest in large trees. The nesting season begins in January, with the laying of one or two eggs.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In recent years, sightings of Black Vultures have become increasingly common, especially during the summer. Black Vultures are often seen mixed in with Griffon Vultures and, occasionally, Bearded Vultures. The species does not nest in Ticino.
