Description
The Crested Tit is a small passerine, about 11–12 cm long. It is easily recognizable by its characteristic crest on its head, which gives it a distinctive appearance. Its plumage is predominantly gray and brown, with a white face and a black mask extending to the crest. This species feeds mainly on insects and seeds, especially in winter. It prefers wooded habitats, particularly coniferous forests; it can also adapt to parks and gardens, especially if they contain ornamental conifers. During the breeding season, between April and June, it builds its nest in natural or artificial cavities.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
The Crested Tit is widespread throughout Italy and in Ticino, with the exception of the low-altitude areas of the Sottoceneri. The species is more common at elevations above 1,000 meters, where it is associated with coniferous forests and, to a lesser extent, mixed forests.
