Description
The cormorant is a large waterbird with predominantly black plumage and metallic sheen. It has a long neck and a sturdy, yellowish beak adapted for catching fish, its main food source. It prefers aquatic environments such as lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. The breeding season begins in the spring, when cormorants build nests in colonies in trees. To hunt, they are capable of diving to considerable depths.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In the Canton of Ticino, the Great Cormorant is present year-round. It nests in colonies at the Bolle di Magadino; several winter roosts are known to exist in both the Sottoceneri and the Sopraceneri regions.
