The Great Shrike is a medium-sized bird characterized by light gray plumage on its back and a white chest and belly. Its head features a black mask that extends from the eyes to the base of the beak, giving it a proud and distinctive appearance. Adults measure about 24 cm in length. This predator feeds mainly on small rodents, insects, and other birds, hunting from high perches. Like all shrikes, it is known for its habit of impaling prey on thorns or barbed wire to create makeshift larders. The Great Grey Shrike is a partial migrant, with northern populations moving south during the winter. It prefers open habitats such as heathlands, fields, and cultivated areas with scattered trees. The breeding season begins in the spring, with nests built in bushes or low trees. Despite its appearance, the Great Grey Shrike is not closely related to birds of prey.
