Description
The Eurasian Kestrel is a small bird of prey. The male has a bluish-gray head and tail, while the females and juveniles have more brownish tones. Its wings are long and pointed. It feeds mainly on small mammals, insects, and occasionally small birds. It is capable of hovering—that is, remaining stationary in the air by rapidly flapping its wings. Kestrels can be found in a variety of habitats, including open countryside, forest edges, and urban areas. The breeding season runs from spring to early summer, when they nest in cavities, abandoned buildings, or old corvid nests.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In the Canton of Ticino, the Eurasian Kestrel is a breeding species and is common throughout the year. It prefers open and semi-open areas, such as meadows and farm fields, but it can also be found in high mountain regions.
