The nightjar is a medium-sized nocturnal bird, characterized by brown and gray camouflage plumage that helps it hide during the day. It feeds on moths and other flying insects, which it catches in flight. It lives in heathlands, open woodlands, and areas with sparse vegetation. The breeding season runs from May to July, during which it lays 1–2 eggs on bare ground. The species winters in Africa.
