Description
The Rock Partridge is a medium-sized bird with a sturdy, compact build. Its plumage is characterized by gray-brown tones with a distinctive black-and-white stripe around the neck. Its legs and beak are bright red. The rock partridge is known for its gregarious behavior and is often seen in small groups. It feeds mainly on seeds, insects, and small invertebrates. It prefers mountainous and hilly habitats with open vegetation and scattered rocks. The breeding season occurs between April and June, during which it builds nests on the ground, well hidden among the vegetation.
The Situation in Italian-Speaking Switzerland
In Switzerland and Ticino, the rock partridge reaches the northern limit of its European range. Currently, in Ticino, the rock partridge is evenly distributed throughout the canton, from the Gotthard Pass to the Sottoceneri region, at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,500 meters. Its preferred habitat consists of a combination of alpine pastures, scree slopes, and sparse mountain shrubbery on steep slopes that are generally south-facing.
